Climate change will present Canada with serious challenges. The most obvious will be how much precipitation we’ll have and where and when it will fall.
In many ways, what happens to our water will be the measure of how the lives of Canadians will change because of increasing global temperatures. Managing water carefully and increasing our conservation efforts, while working toward controlling greenhouse emissions, will buy us time.
By managing Canada’s water carefully now, it may be possible for us to minimize climate change impacts long enough to develop alternate energy solutions and implement sustainable water practices. To do this we need to better understand what water is and what it does, in both our ecosystems and our economy. We need to respect the fact that climate change will seriously affect the quality and quantity of our water resources, which will in turn affect our economic stability and way of life. The freshwater legacy of future generations depends upon it.
