Water security is one of the most urgent issues of the 21st century. Yet Canadians continue to operate under the myth of water wealth, convinced that the water well will never run dry.
The threats to Canada's water security are mounting – global warming, water exports, invasive species, wastage and over-consuming lifestyles. Yet conserving and sustaining our precious water resources are still not priorities for us as a country.
The path to a true national water strategy requires involvement among all levels of government (federal, provincial, territorial, aboriginal and municipal), industry and manufacturing sectors, and individual Canadians. We need to be united by common principles that emphasize a culture of water conservation. We need to have commitment, leadership and action now or we’re going to end up in trouble. Clearing up the myth about limitless water is a good place to start.
